ScreenConnect issues during exam (Ubuntu Linux 18.04)

# Breaking news, I got my free exam retake back!

Hi Chang,
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately, we experienced an issue with ScreenConnect on our end during your exam which caused the proctored sessions to be inaccessible. As such, we have added a free exam retake to your account. Please use your exam scheduling link in order to schedule a new exam attempt.
In addition for future exam attempts, should you require technical assistance, please reach out to our Help Department via [email protected] . Alternatively, for technical assistance in real time, which is the preferred method, we recommend reaching out to our Administrators.
For more information about the contact protocol, please visit: https://support.offensive-security.com/oscp-exam-guide/#contact-protocol
Lastly, we recommend testing the ScreenConnect and WebCam sessions before future exam attempts using any of the following test OSIDs: OS-67890, OS-67891, OS-67892, OS-67893, OS-67894, or OS-67895 You can log in with any of the test OSIDs outlined above for both applications at https://screenconnect.offensive-security.com:8040/ and https://webcam.offensive-security.com/ .
Should you have any additional questions, feel free to contact us again.
Sincerely,
The Offensive Security Team https://www.offensive-security.com

# Fixed! I have to shell out $150 now but I successfully tested the registration and camera on a Firefox 67.04 Browser on Ubuntu 18.04

Despite the loss of a free exam take, OffSec provided me the following public student ID's to test if it works in this message

Hello C********,
Thank you for contacting us.
You may test a session using any of the following test OSIDs: OS-67890, OS-67891, OS-67892, OS-67893, OS-67894, or OS-67895, for both applications at https://screenconnect.offensive-security.com:8040/ and https://webcam.offensive-security.com/ Please note, there will not be a proctor on the other end when you connect, but you can at least install the ScreenConnect software and test your connection.
You may purchase a retake via your personalized purchase link if you wish to re-schedule the exam.
For more information about our proctoring program, please visit our FAQ section: https://www.offensive-security.com/faq/#exam-proc
Keep us updated should you require any additional information.
Sincerely,
The Offensive Security Team https://www.offensive-security.com

Here is what I did. That definitively fixed the ScreenConnect portion (screencasting portion of the proctoring), which is using openJDK 11

  1. Installed icedtea with apt-get update && apt-get install -y icedtea-plugin

That gives you the weblauncher applet when you load ScreenConnect.
The bottom, steps wouldn't have worked because of limited support for plugins.
These steps may, or may not have helped. Installing Oracle Java 8 and then manually installed the Java plugin into the latest version of Firefox.
  1. Installed Oracle Java 8, from here https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html
  2. Download jre-8u211-linux-x64.tar.gz and de-archive/decompress it, tar -xzf jre-8u211-linux-x64.tar.gz
  3. Make a directory called /uslocal/java
  4. Copy jre1.8.0_211 to the new path, cp -r jre1.8.0_211 /uslocal/java
  5. Now follow this guide https://java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser_ubuntu.xml
By the end of these steps, you should have a symbolic link from /uslocal/java/jre1.7.0/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so to /uslib/firefox-addons/plugins/libnpjp2.so (blue on console)

Then remember to use the student registration numbers provided in the email above (yours will NOT work until your exam is scheduled) to navigate to https://screenconnect.offensive-security.com:8040/ and also make sure that https://webcam.offensive-security.com works
If successful...
  1. You'll receive a pop-up from ScreenConnect to install a Java applet. That then makes a join request (that'll never be answered because its a test account) for online proctoring
  2. Your browser on webcam should perfectly render a real-time stream of your Linux webcam. If it's a empty white box, click on the blinking red camera icon to the left of your green SSL/TLS lock. Then go down to settings and click the gear. And add https://webcam.offensive-security.com to the list of allowed URIs

# Old post

Hi, I recently lost my free chance to take the exam (despite being prepped and ready, being able to perform a BOF in 16 minutes and 33 seconds) all because of

1. Poor Linux support of the ScreenConnect java applet web application (Googled the living hell out of detailed documentation outside of ConnectWise's claims that it's compatible with Ubuntu, Red Hat, and other Debian/Fedora based Linux distros)
2. Firefox 62+, my default browser, does not allow such java applets to run due to removal of NPAPI support since Firefox 52 https://java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml (Chrome has also followed the trend and disallows execution of Java applets)
3. Online OSCP reviews of the proctoring process alleging that ScreenConnect consumes a lot of CPU cycles and crashes frequently, requiring the proctor to personally demand the exam taker to restart the process https://laurencetennant.com/oscp

I know, I should read the OSCP Exam Link: https://support.offensive-security.com/proctoring-faq/, I shot myself in the foot really bad.

I just want to continue hacking through my System76 Ubuntu 18.04 laptop. I don't want to conform to Windows or the "ideal" exam-taker box of a Windows 10 machine running VMWare with Kali as a VM. I paid over $1,300 for a ideal hacking laptop, running my favorite hypervisor, QEMU-KVM, multi-managing multiple Windows instances and my two Kali images. One is my lab image, and the other is a former Offensive Security provided VMWare image I converted to qcow2 using the qemu-img convert -f vmdk -O qcow2 [VMWare index file] [new KVM image], by which only use I found was the Linux Buffer Overflow exercise.

It's frustrating. They told me that I have to pay $150 and lost my chance of the free exam.

Please help me...

  1. Install a working version of Firefox 50 (I already unzipped the tar.bz2 into it's own folder)
  2. Properly install the libnpjp2.so plugin (unzipping Oracle Java 8 into the /uslocal/java directory and running `ln -s /uslocal/java/jre1.8.0_211/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so` within the /home/ctlisteDownloads/firefox-sdk/include/mozilla/plugins directory didn't work, checked 'about:plugins' on the deprecated browser)
  3. Validate that ScreenConnect works on the deprecated Firefox WITHOUT having to waste $150

Currently, I am using Amazon S3 to move a massive amount of my lab notes data (14 roots, up to 8 underprivileged shells) onto the cloud so I can download it back into my Windows gaming laptop into the VMWare image, it's gonna take awhile.

From what I have seen, the least hassle is simply conforming to:

  1. Windows Host
  2. VMWare hypervisor
  3. Provided OffSec 32-bit image
  4. Windows Java Runtime Environment, preferably Oracle
  5. ScreenConnect, from what I have read, isn't supposed to be locally installed, instead the applet on the https://screenconnect.offensive-security.com:8040/ link is supposed to launch automatically within a Windows/Mac Web Browser that connects to the monitoring app that offsec uses.
  6. Downgraded browser that supports launching of Java applets with the Oracle Java plugin preinstalled.

Is there a way I can test this? Like a "Test Your ScreenConnect build" link?
