Back when KaZaa first came out, around 2001, I was in middle school. I was getting really interested in music and would download tons of albums and music compilations, stuff like that. It was the wild west days of the internet— I miss that excitement, honestly. I was pretty stupid and unaware of shit on the internet back then, so I’d end up downloading some really gross stuff— luckily never anything illegal, but I saw some porn I was waaaay too young to see and some gore that was pretty hardcore to my innocent suburban middle-class eyes. We also didn’t get anything better than 56K until a few years later, so I’d spend a whole day downloading, say, Linkin Park’s Greatest Hits (I was really cool in middle school, lol), and end up with something I’d have to delete in a hurry before I got grounded or, worse, banned from the computer.
Occasionally, though, I’d run into things that were just strange or mundane, not gross or vulgar. Video of some lady rocking a porcelain doll. Audio files of a guy reading bible verses in terrible accents. Insanely detailed text dumps about all the varieties of birds. Anybody who used those old file-sharing programs (or hell, torrents today, in some places) has those kind of stories. This is one of them.
I can’t remember what I was intending to download, probably something like a big artist discography, but it was massive by early 2000s standards— a few hundred megabytes at least. It took up a sizable chunk of our hard drive. But I remember it downloading faster than I’d expected— like I said, 56K, but this thing was done in a couple hours when it should have taken a night or two. What was inside was just bizarre, in a way that’s somewhat difficult to explain, but I’ll try.
First off, it took forever to unzip it— my copy of winzip kept giving me error messages about my system time being wrong, and I had to download the earliest version available online before it would work (I think some alpha build), and even then it must have taken an hour to extract. When I opened it I was honestly disappointed after all the effort. It was a folder of 20-30 videos, and I remember getting ready to delete them right away, assuming they were weird porn. But I opened the first one, just to make sure (and also because… I was a 12 year old boy and it might have been porn).
It wasn’t porn and it wasn’t gore. It was just a grainy video of a bathtub full of water, the surface rippling like there was a strong wind. Exactly 30 seconds— I remember they were all that way, exactly 30 seconds. That sounds completely boring but there was something just off about it. You know how sometimes you see weird youtube videos with views in the single digits where you can just tell something weird was happening just off camera? It was like that.
I opened the next video and it was much the same— this time, a video of a mantlepiece covered in dust. There were framed pictures and decorations on it, but they were unidentifiable due to the heavy grime buildup. Nothing moved in that video except for floating dust particles caught in a sunbeam. And there was no sound, but not in a way that the camera had been muted— in the way that there was complete and utter silence in that room, wherever it was. I couldn’t even hear whoever was behind the camera breathing. The third video was the interior of an office building. All the phones were ringing, but the room was empty and no one came to answer them. The video cut off before they stopped ringing.
Most of the videos were of weird building interiors like that, but there were two others that I remember vividly:
  1. Footage from inside of a car, driving along a straight highway somewhere in the southwest— desert and endless blue sky. The camera was in the passenger’s seat, but you couldn’t see the driver. It was one of the few videos with sound— there was some kind of device on the dashboard, like in a cop car, with lots of dials and radar things. Haha, sorry, I don’t have the vocabulary here, maybe somebody will know what I’m talking about. But it was beeping and there was lots of static for the full 30 seconds. It could have been morse code, or just random noise. The view was so beautiful, though. I’d never seen such wide open, empty spaces before.
  2. This one was different from the others too— most of them were static videos of one specific object or place. This one was from the perspective of someone walking down a city street, only it was empty of people or animals. The camera bobbed with every step, like in a game. It started off pointing upwards to the buildings above, and halfway through moved sharply down to street level. It could have been any American city— I had never been outside my shitty little hometown back then, anyway, so I couldn’t figure out the location.
I went on AIM to tell my best friend J about it since he liked weird stuff like that, and told him the file name so he could download it himself. But it had already been deleted. That wasn’t so strange back then— I think if someone went offline, their shared files wouldn’t show up in the search engine.
I kind of forgot about the videos the next day, moving on to the next nu-metal compilation. But a few of the images from the videos had stuck in my mind, and while I waited for something else to download, I opened that folder again. Not wanting to watch some of the more boring ones again I changed the folder setting to show me thumbnails of the video files, as opposed to the list view.
There were people in the thumbnails. The bathtub video had been empty— water and wind. But in the thumbnail, someone was lying in the bathtub, staring into the camera. It was low-res, but unmistakable as a human man— mouth open and eyes wide. His expression wasn’t clear— fear, joy, anger? And the following videos were all the same— sometime the human face was close to the camera, sometimes there was a full body in the background, indistinct but recognizable. Sometimes clothed, sometimes naked, though never in a sexual way. But someone was in all of them. Well, almost all. In the car video with the beeping devices, there was no one I could see. But In the video of the city street, there was someone dead on the sidewalk— you could make out his splayed position and the red blood around his head, like he had jumped from up above. I remember that one well. It disturbed me more than all the gross war gore I had accidentally downloaded before, even though it was so low-resolution.
I opened up every video again but they were the same as they were before. No people at all. I tried to convince myself that this must have been some weird bug— after all, it had been such a pain to unzip the files. It couldn’t have been that weird for the thumbnails of two videos to get switched, especially on a buggy program like KaZaa.
Bu that didn’t make sense— all the people in the thumbnails were in the videos I had seen, not in stills from different videos entirely. A prank, then. Some stupid prank to mess with kids like me.
I IM’d my buddy J again and told him about it, and he got all excited and wanted to come over and see. I said sure, since I was home alone (latchkey kid) and was honestly feeling kinda shaken, though I never would have admitted it. He was into computers and tried to pretend he was some kind of master hacker when he could barely write HTML, but I thought he could maybe help shed some light on the situation.
He only lived a few doors down and showed up a few minutes later, full of energy. He started cracking jokes and I felt a lot better immediately— having J there made me feel less like I’d stepped into some weird alternate universe.
He watched a few of the videos, looked at the thumbnails, and agreed that it must be a really involved prank, though his heart didn’t seem in it. Probably some crazy special-effects buff with a lot of spare time and a sadistic streak. Most of the internet pranks back then were more things like screamers, though— purely shock value.
KaZaa kept a text record of the files you had downloaded from it, even if the original person had un-shared it, so I took a look to see if we could learn anything. There was no username attached, and the title of the file was just a string of gibberish numbers and letters. The keywords, though, were endless— encompassing everything from what seemed like every musical act since 1980 to stuff that would put you on a terrorist watchlist these days. There wasn’t really any rhyme or reason there— just a list of popular people, places and things, along with some phrases that would definitely pique the attention of any law enforcement monitoring, haha (was the NSA even around back then?). Maybe that’s why it got taken down so quickly.
J didn’t really know enough to delve too deeply, but we did find one thing unusual— the size of the video files, probably 5 megabytes each, didn’t add up to the size of the zip file. Not even close. The original file was at least three times as big. So we found that there was actually another file there, hidden by default on my computer (I remember we had to log into my dad’s admin account to see it). It was a .txt file— a 200 to 300 megabyte .txt file. Every program we tried to open it in crapped out. J even tried changing the filetype in the hopes that it was a mislabeled file, another video or photos or something. No luck. It might have been some obscure filetype my computer didn’t have the program for. No idea. The brief glances we got before NotePad crashed, though, made it clear that even if we did open it, we probably wouldn’t understand it. Just strings upon strings of letters and numbers with no obvious pattern or meaning. The only other weird thing was that the 'last modified' date for the file was something weird and impossible, but J said that wasn't so strange for a file so full of errors.
We lost interest after a few days of no progress and moved on to playing counterstrike every day after school, so I never really got closure. And a few months after that, my dad ended up getting caught ripping off his work and a legal team came and confiscated our hard drive (mom still won’t talk about it, lost my whole music collection…), parents got divorced, the world went to shit, I nearly flunked out of high school, picked up a minor drug problem, yadda yadda. In the wake of that shitstorm, I nearly forgot about those videos until I visited my hometown last week and got a beer with J.
I’ve searched Google a few times and tried to find if anyone remembers downloading the same file, but no luck yet. Either no one caught the weird thumbnail thing or I was the only one to download it, which seems unlikely given all those keywords. Just some weird internet fluke I could never explain, I guess.
I can still remember those images so clearly, though. The man on the sidewalk, his body all contorted and bloody. Who was he? And that video in the car has always stuck with me. That endless blue sky.
